Project Mosquito Net

Every 30 seconds a child dies from malaria. Make it stop.     My name is Jack Newsome and I am 9 years old.  For the past two months I have been working with Father Zolner towards a badge for Cub Scouts.  I have learned about who Jesus is, how we worship him, and the good things he has done.  Being a Christian is about more than simply going to church.  We need to know Jesus, how to read the Bible, and how to serve others as Christ would.  However, this article is not just about what I have learned, but rather about what all of this new knowledge has led me to do.

St. George’s already does a great deal of outreach to our community and the world.  I would like to introduce the parish to a new outreach opportunity.  In Africa, a person dies every 30 seconds from a disease called Malaria.  This disease can be easily prevented with a mosquito bed net.  My goal is to raise $1000 by Easter so that we can purchase 200 nets and save 200 lives.

Children receiving netsI have chosen to use an organization called “Project Mosquito Net.”  All donations go directly to buy nets for people in Mbita, Kenya.  These nets, which only cost $5 each, can save a person’s life.  The insecticide on most mosquito nets only last about six months, but these nets are treated with an insecticide that will last for 3-5 years.

If you would like to make a donation, please send a check to St. George’s Anglican Church and put “Project Mosquito Net” in the memo section.  Remember, for only $5, the cost of a cup of coffee, you can save a person’s life this Easter.  For more information on the "Project Mosquito Net" organization, please click here.

Update:

As of April 12, 2011 we have raise $1622.80 for Project Mosquito Net.  A big thanks goes out to Jack Newsome for organizing this fund raiser and to all of our parishioners who gave so generously.
